You must be wondering why I am calling him a rotten apple. Ok, imagine a rotten apple in your hand now. The apple looks prefectly ok on the surface. It looks red and juicy. However once you slice it into two and observe the inside, it's infested with worms. Rotten apple is just an understatement.
When he first came into the brigade, Yeo used to tell me that he looks like a very nice chap and should be a good Ops WO, much better than the naggy 2WO Timothy Koh, because of the way he carries himself in front of us.
Then the BTOC project become his first major assignment as a Ops WO. He's not only "on the ball" but rather "over the ball". He is determined to achieve his aim to build his dream BTOC at the expanse of the welfare of the guys. He doesn't think about the consequences when he makes a decision. Let me give you more examples to support my view. We gave him recommendations that the dri-clad covers are unsuitable for the use as a material to be used in the BTOC, because generally, these covers are condemned and in a very bad condition. Furthermore, they are heavy and the current design of the BTOC will not be able to take on the weight of it. However he insisted that it will be good for him to take a sample of the material for his contractor. He make it seemed like his so-called contractor is some big shot and when the contractor comes to view the material at 8am the next morning, there must be no delay. I was thinking that we are giving the contractor work to do, we are customers and the contractor can wait for all we care. There is seriously no rush to it because the Texas team will only be back in 3 weeks time then, and RSM and S3 did not want it to be done so urgently either. He still wants us to give him a sample of the material, so we hesitated. Then I gave him an idea to say that the green canvas we used in the previous BTOC to cover the gaps between the tent canvas was sufficient for that purposes, but he didn't take it. In the end, we took him to see the dri-clad covers and finally after drawing a whole bunch of keys to the MSVP and pitstop we make him give up on the idea. Stubborn still, he went to see S3 about the material and took the green canvas we recommended earlier so as to claim credit. A whole lot of trouble when it could have been done in less than 3 mins.
Next incident, he places a list of names for the marching contingent for the 9division and hq infantry merger parade because that's the whole list of people who are combat fit and arms trained. He didn't even consult with the guys involved and ask for their other committments in the parade. In the end, he got himself into a nasty situation when he has to take out the names like Yeo, Leong & I because Yeo is on leave (he didn't even check with his guys whether he is on leave or not during the rehearsal days before realising it) and Leong & I have to bring the vehicles used in static display and paint them for the parade. If he had think before he act, he didn't not put himself in such embarassment and withdraw our names in the end. Probably some other poor fellow will get involved (a.k.a kenna arrow) in the parade at the very last minute too.
Another memorable incident, was that he told Chuen and Andrew to come back on our long weekend saturday because they didn't take their IPPT last month (they were new to the brigade then and missed their chance to take the test for some reason I can't remember). This Ops WO didn't know what was the normal procedure, and require them to come back without excuses. Chuen and Andrew was so down on morale that Friday evening, and I had to tell the 2 of them to call RSM up and explain the situation. The problem is that they did not choose not to take the test or they have failed their trial tests, but he, as a WO, did not bother to make an effort to clear up this misunderstanding. In the end, RSM had to call him up and make him tell Andrew that both of them are no longer required to come back that saturday. And just today, Chuen got a silver and Andrew got a gold. So what was the problem?
Is this how he worked for the Army for so many years? So indecisive and will sacrifice anything to achieve his aims to impress his superiors?
I am sick of him being so good on the surface (like asking if we have eaten, or want anything to eat during duty days, etc) and being so rotten on the inside (BTOC is all he cares about, confining those who can't pass their IPPT is his forte, etc)
